Visby attractions: plan your sights around the walled town

Visby packs its sights inside a medieval wall, but what they ask of you varies. Gotlands Museum holds the carved picture stones, ancient skeletons and the world's largest silver treasure on Strandgatan, and needs two to three hours and a booked ticket. The harbour and Almedalen, by contrast, cost nothing and take minutes downhill from the lanes.

The ring wall shapes everything. Kruttornet, the gunpowder tower, marks the oldest stretch, dating from the mid-1100s, though the tower interior is shut on safety grounds and no reopening is planned; the free wall walk past it remains the point. Almedalen sits beside it, a grass strip where the 1968 speech that began Almedalsveckan was made, with no exhibits or stage.

Indoors, the Gotland Art Museum offers a short pause in the old town, while the Botanical Garden gives a compact, walled walk among rare plantings. For both, opening times and charges are worth confirming before an out-of-season visit. Cruise passengers can walk from the modern quay through Almedalen and past Kruttornet, allowing half a day.

Free walks and open spaces

Almedalen is open public space with nothing to book: come for the harbour view and the story of the 1968 speech. The harbour itself is free to walk, and the route between the cruise quay and Almedalen passes Kruttornet and the wall. The tower interior is closed, but the wall walk past it costs nothing and takes five to ten minutes.

Booking ahead for the museum

Gotlands Museum recommends booking, which makes sense given its two-to-three-hour visit and the picture stones, skeletons and silver treasure in Fornsalen. Konstmuseet is a separate building, so check the door before you set out. For the Gotland Art Museum and the Botanical Garden, opening days and prices are not given, so confirm before travelling.
