Uppsala rewards a bike: cycle paths knit the whole city together, linking the centre, parks along the River Fyris and excursion spots beyond. For a short break, hiring for a day is the simplest way to widen your radius without relying on buses. This guide covers where to rent, what kind of bike suits which ride, and how to plan your hours on two wheels.

Where to rent a bike in Uppsala

Two rental options stand out for visitors. Bibblans Cykel sits on S:t Olofsgatan 15, right beside Uppsala City Library, which makes it the obvious pick if you are starting from the centre and want to ride straight out into the city. Aktivt Uteliv, at Dag Hammarskjölds Väg 270 in Sunnersta, is an outdoor and sports shop south of the centre that rents mountain and road bikes and has a dedicated mountain biking trail on site.

There is a third route for anyone after something less ordinary. Cykeltrafik.se rents recumbent bikes, tandems, mountain bikes, folding bikes and standard city and hybrid machines, with several bikes kept in Luthagen about two kilometres from the station. If your trip leans towards the old town and the river rather than the forests, the hybrid is the practical choice.

Bike types: city, hybrid, mountain and road

Think about the ride before you choose the machine. A city or hybrid bike handles the city centre, the riverside paths and the run out to the university buildings and the cathedral without complaint. Mountain bikes are the tool for the trail networks around Uppsala, and road bikes suit riders who want distance on tarmac; Aktivt Uteliv covers both of those categories in Sunnersta.

If you plan to spend the day in the saddle rather than stopping often, choose a bike with fittings that let you carry a lock, water and a layer. Folding bikes from cykeltrafik.se are worth considering if you want to combine a ride with a train leg later, though you should confirm bike carriage rules with the operator before you travel.

ID, insurance and booking before you ride

Bring photo ID: Destination Uppsala advises carrying some form of identification for the rental. Ask at the counter whether insurance is included and exactly what it covers, because a cheap hire that excludes damage or theft can cost more than it saves. Check the saddle and handlebar height before you leave the shop, and adjust them then rather than discovering a problem a kilometre away.

Availability and prices are not something to guess at. Compare what each shop lists for its bikes and ask about the period you need, especially if you want a full day or a multi-day hire. If you are weighing a bike against other ways to fill your time, the wider set of things to do in Uppsala gives you a sense of what a day in the city can hold.

Riding the city centre and the River Fyris paths

The centre is compact, and the peaceful nature paths along the River Fyris are the most pleasant way out of it. Ride north or south along the water and you get green space, bridges and a quieter side of Uppsala without leaving the city. The river corridor also makes a natural spine for a sightseeing loop that takes in the old town and the cathedral quarter.

Plan your stops before you set off. A loop that links the river with a wander through the old town and a pause at a café works better than an open-ended ride, particularly if you only have a morning. If you would rather not plan the route yourself, a walking tour of the centre pairs well with an afternoon on the bike.

One city-centre caution: parking a bike takes a lock, and a sturdy one is worth carrying or asking about at the rental desk. If your day leans towards browsing rather than pedalling, shopping in Uppsala around Stora Torget is easy on foot and lets you leave the bike at the shop.

Mountain bike trails around Uppsala

Uppland's landscape is the draw here, and the trail network around Uppsala covers all levels, with winding paths through forests, ridges and open countryside. Named areas include Sunnerstaåsens friluftsområde, Granebergsskogen, Vårdsätra Skog, the southern MTB trail, Kronparken, Tipp-toppen in Storvreta and Björklinge. Pick a cluster rather than trying to tick them all off in one day.

Beginners should start on the gentler loops and build confidence before tackling the steeper, rootier sections. Aktivt Uteliv's on-site trail in Sunnersta is a sensible first stop if you are renting a mountain bike there, since you can test the bike before committing to a longer ride. Carry water and a repair kit; trailheads sit away from the centre.

The pump track in Sara Lisas Park, Sävja

Uppsala's first pump track sits in Sara Lisas Park in Sävja, and it is a self-contained bit of fun rather than a route. Riders gain speed by pumping the bike over the rollers instead of pedalling, and the track has jumps. Most types of bike can be used on it, so you do not need a specialist machine.

It suits families and anyone who wants a short burst of activity rather than a long ride, and it is a good reason to head out towards Sävja. Combine it with a riverside ride back into town and you get a varied half-day without repeating the same paths.

Route planning: maps, setup and realistic distances

Uppsala Municipality publishes a cycling map showing every cycle path and service station, and Destination Uppsala's own guide suggests scenic rides and attractions worth visiting by bike. Use those instead of improvising a route, and check the map for the connections between the river, the centre and the trailheads you want.

Be realistic about the hours you have. A morning ride along the river, a stop in the centre and an afternoon back out along the water fits comfortably into a day, and building in a pause for a view of the city is part of the pleasure. If you are coming in for a single day from the capital, the Stockholm to Uppsala connection makes an early start feasible.

Hire in the centre or in Sunnersta?

Choose Bibblans Cykel on S:t Olofsgatan if you want to start in the centre and ride the river paths and city streets. Choose Aktivt Uteliv in Sunnersta if mountain or road riding is the point of the day, or if you want a trail on the doorstep of the rental shop. Either way, bring ID, confirm what the insurance covers, and set the saddle before you set off.
