Planning Malmö sightseeing: the sights worth your time
Malmö spreads its sights between the old centre, the castle grounds and the harbour, so where you start decides how much walking you do. The Øresund Bridge is the busiest draw by far, yet most of it is a journey rather than a stop, and the city's best-known landmark, Turning Torso, is admired from outside at the waterfront.
Money splits the choices neatly. Malmö Konsthall shows contemporary art for nothing, Kungsparken, Pildammsparken, Slottsparken and Stortorget cost nothing to enter, and the city library gives you a dry seat without a purchase. Moderna Museet Malmö charges 50 kr but is free up to age 25, while a guided tour is the only way into the Rådhus on Stortorget.
Allow real time for the castle: Malmöhus takes about two hours, Moderna Museet roughly one, and English labels are scarce inside the castle, so pick up a laminated guide at the door. Opera and concert evenings at Malmö Live and Malmö Opera depend on what is on during your dates, so check listings before committing.

Malmö attraction guides

Øresund Bridge: Crossing Between Copenhagen and Malmö
The road and rail link that runs from Copenhagen to Malmö over bridge, island and tunnel. The train avoids the vehicle toll charged at the Swedish end; drivers should follow signs for Malmö, not the airport, before reaching the booths.
a few minutes · 470 DKK or 690 SEK one-way for a car up to 6 m · Best for travelling between Copenhagen and Malmö

Turning Torso, Malmö: Visiting Sweden's Twisted Skyscraper
A 190-metre twisting residential tower by Santiago Calatrava, best seen from the granite reflecting pool at its base — there is no public observation deck, so plan to admire it from the waterfront.
60 minutes · free to view from outside · Best for modern architecture and photography

Malmö Museum: Malmöhus Castle and Moderna Museet Malmö
Two museums share the name: Malmöhus, the moated castle holding history, natural history and Nordic art, and Moderna Museet Malmö for contemporary shows. Standard admission to the art museum is 50 kr, free up to age 25.
2 hours + 90 minutes · Moderna 50 kr, free to 25; Malmöhus varies · Best for wet afternoons and short city breaks

Kungsparken Malmö: King's Park Visitor Guide
A compact band of trees and water linking the old town to the castle grounds, best walked through in one direction rather than visited on its own. In grey weather it is the first thing to drop.
60 minutes · free entry · Best for walking between old town and castle

Stortorget, Malmö: the Main Square and What to See
A broad sixteenth-century square a few minutes' walk from Central Station, where the town hall façade, a gilded-lion pharmacy and an equestrian statue make a quick orientation stop on the way to Lilla Torg.
20-30 minutes · free entry, always open · Best for quick orientation stop on foot

Malmöhus Castle, Malmö: What to See Inside and How Long It Takes
Malmöhus pairs red-towered Renaissance rooms and grim prison quarters with museum galleries on one admission. English labels are scarce, so pick up a laminated guide at the door; the natural history section is the weakest part.
2 hours · one admission fee; 40 SEK in 2014, historical only · Best for castle and local history

Moderna Museet Malmö: Visiting the Art Museum
A branch of Stockholm's modern art museum in a 1901 former power station, with its own changing exhibition programme rather than a fixed hang. Check what's on before you go, and allow about an hour.
about an hour · Paid entry · Book ahead · Best for modern and contemporary art fans

Malmö Konsthall: Free Contemporary Art in Central Malmö
A free contemporary art hall with three or four changing shows a year, so what hangs on the walls depends on your dates. Visitors who assume it always open can find it shut for weeks between exhibitions.
60-90 minutes · free entry · Best for contemporary art on a budget

Malmö Opera: A Visitor's Guide to the Opera House
Malmö's opera house on Östra Rönneholmsvägen stages opera, operettas and musicals, with a restaurant, Operagrillen, in the same building. Visit on a night between productions and the guided tour plus lunch is the option.
an evening; tour slot plus arrival time · Paid entry · Book ahead · Best for opera and musical evenings

Malmö Live: Visiting Malmö's Concert Hall
The city's main concert venue hosts the Malmö Symphony Orchestra, touring acts, comedy and talks across two stages. An evening here pays off only if the programme suits your dates, so look at the listings before you commit.

Sankt Petri kyrka, Malmö: Visiting St Peter's Church
A brick medieval church a short walk from Malmö central station, built 1300–1380 and stripped bare during the Reformation. The carved altarpiece, Moses-supported pulpit and the Chapel of the Merchants frescoes are what repay the stop.
30-45 minutes · Book ahead · Best for Reformation and medieval church interiors

Slottsparken, Malmö: A Visitor's Guide to the Castle Park
A flat 2.6 km loop links the lawns, canal and windmill around Malmöhus Castle, with a walled city garden inside. Most people confuse the park with that garden, so plan for forty minutes minimum on foot.
40-60 minutes · free entry; castle museum charges separately · Best for walkers and short city breaks

Pildammsparken, Malmö: Malmö's Largest Park Explained
Malmö's biggest park, a 45-hectare landscaped space of lakes, mature trees, flower beds and playgrounds that costs nothing to enter. It sits beyond the southern canal, so you must plan the walk there rather than pass through.
about an hour · free entry · Best for walkers and families with children

Form/Design Center Malmö: Exhibitions, Hours and What to See
A compact exhibition house on Lilla Torg covering architecture, design and crafts, with a nine-square-metre city model on floor 2. It shuts on Sundays and Mondays, which decides where it fits in a short break.
60-90 minutes · Free · Best for design and architecture lovers

Malmö Stadsbibliotek: Visiting the City Library
A working municipal library where you can sit dry and read without buying anything, useful as a pause between the old town and the parks. Hours are not fixed, so check the day's times before walking south.
30-60 minutes · free to sit and read; no purchase needed · Best for quiet reading breaks on a walk

Malmö Rådhus: Visiting the Town Hall on Stortorget
The town hall on Stortorget only opens up on scheduled guided tours, split between museum-led representation floors and the council chamber shown by the council presidium. Book through the city's event listing rather than turning up hoping for a place.
Booking required · Best for civic politics and architecture fans
Rainy hours against a dry day outdoors
Grey weather reorders the city quickly. Kungsparken is the first thing to drop, and Turning Torso loses its point without a dry walk to Västra Hamnen. Head instead for Form/Design Centre on Lilla Torg, shut Sundays and Mondays, or Malmö Konsthall on S:t Johannesgatan, which closes Mondays and for weeks between exhibitions while the next show is installed.
On a dry day, walk Kungsparken through to the castle grounds in one direction, add the 2.6 km loop at Slottsparken, then cross the southern canal to Pildammsparken, 45 hectares of lakes and playgrounds. Stortorget takes 20 to 30 minutes on the way to Lilla Torg.
One day in Malmö, pared back
With a single day, start at Malmöhus Castle for the Renaissance rooms, prison quarters and galleries on one admission, then cross to Moderna Museet Malmö, free up to age 25 and 50 kr otherwise, closed Mondays with a Thursday late until 19. The castle pair gives you two hours plus about ninety minutes indoors, close together in the western old centre and harbour district.
If the weather holds, spend the rest of it walking Kungsparken into Slottsparken, then finish at Stortorget for the town hall façade and the gilded-lion pharmacy before Lilla Torg.
